Where Art Meets Architecture: Decoding the Alexandria GradLabs Façade

For the Alexandria GradLabs building, ScanTek 3D provided highly accurate schematics to California Sheet Metal for a custom, FOXP2-inspired architectural sunshade. By delivering millimeter-precise reality capture data, we eliminated fabrication guesswork, ensuring all 176 unique ALUCOBOND PLUS panels aligned flawlessly to solve intense sun glare issues without field rework.

Why Do Complex Architectural Façades Need 3D Scanning?

Commercial buildings often face environmental challenges that demand innovative, site-specific solutions. The architecturally stunning Alexandria GradLabs building faced a distinct functional issue upon construction. Its southwest-facing orientation resulted in intense sun glare, causing occupants to forsake the natural light offered by its expansive windows.

The building needed a sunshade to mitigate the heat and glare, but standard commercial louvers would compromise the aesthetic. The visionary solution was a visually captivating perforated screen inspired by biomimicry. This intricate design was modeled directly after the human protein FOXP2, a gene crucial to human speech and language.

How Does 3D Scanning Enable Biomimicry in Architecture?

Translating this intricate biological concept into a tangible architectural piece was no small feat. California Sheet Metal (CSM) embraced the vision and took on the complex fabrication challenge. The immense difficulty lay in ensuring every distinct panel collectively painted the bigger biological picture.

To execute this biomimicry design, the project required the following rigorous structural metrics:

  • Façade Material: Premium ALUCOBOND PLUS metal panels.

  • Panel Count: 176 totally unique, custom-perforated structural panels.

  • Panel Dimensions: Each individual panel measured 2’ x 15’.

  • Design Concept: The FOXP2 human protein structure.

How Do You Align Custom ALUCOBOND Façade Panels?

When dealing with 176 unique pieces of architectural metal, precision is paramount. If the underlying structural schematics are off by even a fraction of an inch, the 2' x 15' panels will clash during installation, destroying the visual fluidity of the FOXP2 design.

ScanTek 3D provided the exact technological backbone required for such an ambitious venture. We empowered fabricators like CSM with highly accurate, detailed drawings and schematics based on verified field realities.

By capturing the exact spatial conditions of the building's exterior, our reality capture data completely eliminated field guesswork. When every millimeter counts, ScanTek 3D ensures the dream matches reality, allowing every unique ALUCOBOND PLUS panel to align perfectly and elevate the final design.
